Liars club patrons face battery charges

Chicago Anti-Bashing Network activists showed support of the alleged victims of a bashing by Liar's Club employees, as they faced battery charges at the Cook County

Courthouse at Belmont and Western Tuesday morning..

Chad Edwards and Kurt Schneider, represented pro bono by Alan Mills of Uptown People's Law Center, face allegations that they at-

tacked Liar's Club employees. But the two claim they were the ones who were attacked, and in fact Edwards has hospital records showing he had "multiple facial contusions." The bouncers and other employees from the club allegedly gave police conflicting reports of the late-night incident, and none sustained injuries. Supporters say they are angry that while Edwards, Schneider and their transgendered companion alone suffered injuries and property damage, and twice called police to the scene

Thayer said it is "outrageous" that the victims of an anti-gay attack are being prosecuted by State's Attorney Dick Devine's office, when Devine has come out strongly against hate crimes.

CABN helps

South Side MCC fight harassment

Representatives of the Chicago Anti-Bashing Network and the Resurrection Metropolitan Community Church in Hyde Park met recently with a representative of the University of Chicago, with the aim of preventing future harassment of the church.

Over the past two years, the rainbow flag flying from the sign in front of the MCC has been repeatedly stolen, and the sign has been broken.

CABN said that while one person has been convicted in the incidents, a member of the church noticed the harassment coincided with parties held at the SEIU fraternity next door to the church. CABN members are concerned that some element of the fraternity was encouraging harassment. After leaving a SEIU party last fall, three men tore off an MCC flag and burned it, but were caught in the act by police.

Norman Brieno was found guilty of a misdemeanor charge of destruction of property Feb. 3 and sentenced to serve 100 hours of community service under the supervision of Rev. Shane Desautels, Resurrection MCC's pastor. The reverend, despite resistance from police to help stop the harassment, did agree to the reduced charge and sentencing.

On Feb. 8, Karen Dickman, Bob Schwartz and Ben Doherty of CABN, along with Rev. Desautels, met with Charles Farrell of the U. of Chicago's Office of the Dean of Student Affairs. Farrell is responsible for dealing with fraternities., but the university is restricted from taking any direct action in investigating or sanctioning the fraternity because SEIU owns its house, CABN said. However, it can impose disciplinary actions on any student or group of students found to be violating local law or school policies.

Farrell agreed to discuss the harassment concerns with the Dean of Student Affairs and encourage the SEIU board to meet with CABN.

Dickman spoke with Edward Turkington, Dean of Student Affairs, Feb. 11 and expressed concern that while Brieno was guilty in this instance, it was doubtful he alone was responsible for the two-year campaign of harassment. Turkington agreed, and said he was fairly sure Brieno was not in the area for at least some of the other thefts, CABN reported.

Turkington promised he would try to search out more facts in the case. He also offered to facilitate communication between CABN, the university lesbigaytrans student organizations, and the fraternities.
